European Lawyer: Carbon Capture Only Viable With Public Funding

December 3, 2009 (Oil Daily) An article in the December 3, 2009 Oil Daily (subscription) reports on an opinion expressed at the European Power Generation Strategy Summit that predicts that the widespread development of commercial-scale carbon capture and storage projects will not occur before 2030. Widespread deployment of commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects will not occur before 2030, missing the 2020 target date set by the European Union by a decade or more, according to one expert.  That was the pessimistic opinion expressed by Walter Wintersteller, European utilities partner at law firm Booz & Co., during the European Power Generation Strategy Summit in Prague on Wednesday.  What’s more, he says, the technology is unlikely to become anything more than a niche sector, unsustainable without public funding.
